Surgery
Surgery is one of our specialties here at The Vet at BlueRidge, We understand that surgery can be frightening to a devoted pet owner, and we are honored that you entrust your pet to our care. You can rest assured that we never diminish the importance of any surgery by treating it as a “routine” procedure. Even when we have performed a surgical procedure hundreds (or even thousands) of times, every patient and surgical event are handled with the same careful consideration from start to finish. Precautions are taken before, during and after every surgery to ensure your pet’s utmost safety and a successful surgical outcome.
Before surgery, we examine your pet and, as appropriate, perform bloodwork, x-rays and ultrasound to properly plan the surgery and anesthesia. Anesthetic protocols are tailored to each individual patient considering age, health status, and the surgical procedure being performed. The entire time your pet is under anesthesia, vital signs are monitored electronically. Additionally, a trained veterinary technician stays by your pet’s side throughout the surgery and performs continuous hands-on monitoring.
Surgery is performed according to sterile, aseptic technique in a fully equipped surgical suite. Following the surgery, a veterinary technician remains with your pet and continues to monitor vital signs until they are awake. Depending on the procedure, your pet may go home at the end of the day or remain in the hospital overnight. Appropriate pain medications are used before, during, and after the surgical procedure. Although no surgery is without risk, our experience and track record prove that proper planning and implementation can keep those risks to a minimum. The following types of surgery are performed at The Vet at BlueRidge:
Orthopedic Surgery
Soft Tissue Surgery
Emergency Surgery
Ophthalmic Surgery
Elective Surgery
Large Animal Procedures
